How to Budget a Home Remodeling Project

Home remodeling projects can be expensive. Whether you’re looking to remodel a kitchen or a bedroom, it’s important to carefully budget your project. There are often also costs with remodeling that we don’t think about. Taking the time to consider all factors and costs of a remodel project can save a lot of headaches down the line.

Materials

The first thing to consider is the materials needed for your project. If you’re doing a bathroom remodel, this may require a new sink or shower. If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, this may be the floor tiles or kitchen cabinets.

Whatever the remodeling project is, it’s important to the first budget in the material costs. A good way to figure out how much it would cost would be to do your research and find where you would buy these items. Then use these numbers to create an estimate.

Remember to consider the quality of the materials as well. Some materials may be cheap but also poor quality and can end up costing more in the long run if you need to replace them. It’s a good idea to think about what kind of quality of materials you’d like and budget accordingly for them.

Labor

Another important factor is labor. First, you have to decide whether or not you plan to hire a professional or DIY. DIY almost always costs less but takes up more time and effort. If you decide to hire a professional, it’s a good idea to get a few quotes to get a sense of how much it would cost. For example, if you want to hire someone to install kitchen cabinets, you can go on Yelp or Thumbtack and reach out to local businesses and see how much they would charge to get the project done. It’s important to do your research beforehand because it can end up costing you a lot more than you expect.

Tools

Tools are an important part of every project, but it’s often overlooked. When I did my first home remodeling project, I often found myself running to Home Depot all the time to get another tool that didn’t know I needed. As you go along your project, you’ll discover that there is always something missing. If you DIY your project, this is especially important. That’s why its important to do as much research as you can beforehand, and to consider the costs of all the tools.

Junk Removal

Junk removal is definitely something I didn’t think of before doing a home remodeling project. Before doing a project, think about what kind of trash or debris you’ll have from breaking things down. For example, if you plan to re-do your floors, you have to consider how you’ll dispose of your old floors. While most cities have trash programs, it’s important to call them or look on their website on what items they will take. Unfortunately for us, our city didn’t take remodeling debris and so we had to pay another service for the removal. Since we had so much trash, the junk removal cost was pretty hefty. It’s important to consider this as apart of your budget.

Home remodeling projects are fun and exciting. However, they can also be costly. It’s important to do your research and budget beforehand to set realistic expectations.
